Fairyland Malta: Valletta's Christmas Village at Triton Fountain (2026 Guide)

Last updated: 19 October 2026. No affiliate links. ZONDI is our own app; we say so where it appears.

Quick answer: Fairyland, also called Santa's City, is Malta's big Christmas village. It fills Triton Square, right outside Valletta's City Gate, and spreads into the Granaries (Il-Fosos) in Floriana. Expect a Ferris wheel with views over Valletta, Christmas market stalls with gifts, food and mulled wine, an ice rink, rides for children and Santa with his elves. Last season it ran from 5 December 2025 to 4 January 2026. Dates for 2026/27 have not been announced yet; we will update this guide as soon as they are.

Key Takeaways

  • Fairyland is hosted by VisitMalta at Triton Square and the Floriana Granaries, at the entrance to Valletta.

  • Recent editions have opened in early December and closed in the first days of January.

  • The main draws are Rudolph's Wheel, the Christmas market, the ice rink, family rides and Santa's village.

  • It sits next to Valletta's main bus terminus, so the bus is the easiest way to get there.

  • Go after dark for the lights, and on a weekday evening if you prefer smaller crowds.

  • It makes an easy, low-pressure plan for meeting new people in December: everyone knows where Triton Fountain is.

Many visitors to Malta in winter have never heard of Fairyland, and some residents only discover it when they walk out of the bus terminus one December evening and find a Ferris wheel lit up next to the Triton Fountain. It is one of our favourite December tips for Malta: festive, easy to reach and a natural place to meet up with friends, old or new.

What Is Fairyland Malta?

Fairyland is a seasonal Christmas village hosted by VisitMalta, the Malta Tourism Authority's brand. It has returned to Triton Square for several seasons. In 2021 it already featured a Ferris wheel, an ice rink and Christmas food stalls around the fountain, and it has grown since then. In recent editions it has expanded into the Granaries in Floriana, with more rides, a bigger market and the ice rink.

The atmosphere is family-friendly, but it is not just for children. Adults come for the wheel, the market stalls, mulled wine and the simple pleasure of walking through a lit-up Christmas village in a Mediterranean capital.

Where Is Fairyland and How Do You Get There?

Fairyland is set around the Triton Fountain, the large bronze fountain just outside City Gate at the entrance to Valletta, and continues into the Granaries (Il-Fosos), the open square in Floriana a short walk away.

  • By bus: Valletta's main bus terminus is right next to the Triton Fountain, and buses from most parts of Malta end there. Check routes and times in the Tallinja app.

  • By ferry: ferries from Sliema and the Three Cities run to Valletta. From the landing points, allow time for a walk up to City Gate.

  • By car: parking around Valletta and Floriana is limited, especially on December evenings, so public transport is usually the easier choice.

What You'll Find at Fairyland

The exact line-up changes from year to year, but the 2025/26 edition included the following:

Rudolph's Wheel

The Ferris wheel is Fairyland's landmark. From the top you get a view over Valletta's skyline and the Floriana bastions, and it is especially worth it after dark, when the village below is lit up.

Christmas Market and Food

Market stalls sell Christmas gifts, decorations and artisan products, alongside street food, seasonal treats and mulled wine. It is a good place to pick up small presents or simply graze your way through the evening.

Ice Rink

An ice rink is a rare sight in Malta, which is part of the fun. In recent editions it has been set up at the Granaries in Floriana. Skating is ticketed, so check the official site before you go.

Rides and Santa's Village

Families will find a carousel and rides such as the Candy Cane Slide, Frosty Bike Circuit, Dasher's Roundabout and Tinsel Track, plus the Chaos Lab, an interactive play space for children. Santa and his elves are part of the village too.

When Is Fairyland 2026?

As of 19 October 2026, the organisers have not announced dates for the 2026/27 season. Recent editions give a good idea of what to expect:

Season

Dates

2025/26

5 December 2025 – 4 January 2026

2022/23

8 December 2022 – 6 January 2023

2021/22

3 December 2021 – 2 January 2022

If the pattern holds, Fairyland will open in early December 2026 and close in the first days of January 2027. Check the official Fairyland Malta website and VisitMalta before you fix a date.

Best Time to Visit

  • After sunset: the lights, the wheel and the fountain look their best in the dark, and December sunsets in Malta come early.

  • Weekday evenings: weekends and the days around Christmas tend to be busiest, especially with families.

  • Dress in layers: December days in Malta are mild, but evenings can feel cool and windy, especially at the top of the wheel.

Tickets and Costs

Rides, the wheel and the ice rink are ticketed, and in past seasons tickets were sold on site and through the official Fairyland Malta website. Prices and opening hours are usually published close to the opening date, so check fairylandmalta.com before your visit. Food and drinks are paid for at the stalls.

Make an Evening of It in Valletta

Fairyland is right at the start of Valletta, so it is easy to combine with the rest of the capital's Christmas programme. Christmas in the Capital is listed from 25 November to 31 December 2026, with decorations, lights, a Christmas tree and nativity scenes around the city. Walk through City Gate and down Republic Street for the lights, or head to the Upper Barrakka Gardens for the view over the Grand Harbour.

Going Alone? Turn Fairyland Into a Plan With People

Fairyland is one of the easiest places in Malta to meet up with people you don't know well yet. The meeting point is obvious, the plan is short, and there is plenty to talk about, from which ride to brave first to where to find the best mulled wine.

  • Make it specific: "Fairyland, Triton Fountain, Thursday at 7" is much easier to say yes to than "let's do something Christmassy."

  • Use an activity-first app: on ZONDI, our own app, you can post a plan like this or join one someone nearby has already created. ZONDI is free and live in Malta, and it is available on iOS, Android and at zondi.app.

  • Keep it easy: meet at the fountain, take a walk through the market and decide on the spot whether to ride the wheel or continue into Valletta.

  • Stay safe: meet in the busy, public part of the village, keep your belongings close in the crowds and check your bus home before the evening ends.
